Latex balloons are made from the sap of the rubber tree ( Hevea brasiliensis ). If you cut a notch in the tree, a milky liquid immediately starts to drip out; you could almost say that the tree can be "milked". That's why it's also called the weeping tree. It takes a maximum of 2 years for a balloon to completely dissolve (with plastic it takes about 400 years).

The balloon is made from natural rubber, filled with helium, and rises into the sky until it bursts at a height of around 8 kilometers into fine, thin strips that then slide to the ground. According to statistics, a single balloon lands on the ground in an area of around 25 km². This small amount rots and returns to nature.
